Wunstorf. It is a song against hatred, agitation, aggression and fake news – and in favour of mutual respect, tolerance and a peaceful cooperation of people in general: Former teacher Burkhard Jonczyk has written an emotional song and recorded it with the musicians of the popular country-rockband The BossHoss in the studio. “The song was a deep concern to me. The general atmosphere in my own country and the world is bringing me down”, Jonczyk says. The title of the song is “What Matters”.

And this is where you get the song

The song has been uploaded with the help of “DistroKid”, a service which distributes it on all platforms around the world. You can listen to it on Spotify or YouTube  , for example. “No more haters, no more arrogance, what we need is respect and tolerance” is the ending of the first verse of Jonczyk’s song. So, the song belongs to the genre of protest songs.

Peaceful exchange of views

66-year-old Jonczyk is concerned about the increasing uncertainty of today’s society because of political border-lining enforcing nationalism and prejudice of all kinds. Jonczyk thinks that this is even enforced by a steady flow of extreme, partly hateful comments on all kinds of topics on the internet.

“The majority of people all over the world does not belong to those few who consider themselves to be free to insult others or promote fake news”, Jonczyk says. He wants “all these haters” to stop this and wants to convey the idea of a peaceful, democratic and outcome-oriented exchange of views.

The contact to the country-rockband The BossHoss was realized quickly. The drummer of the band, Ansgar Freyberg from Wunstorf, had already recorded a song with Jonczyk when he was still a student at Hölty-Gymmnasium Wunstorf. Furthermore he had taught Jonczyk’s son Robert playing the drums. Freyberg then called his band mates whose live-acts had completely been cancelled because of Corona. So, the brass section players Semjon Barias (trumpet), Stefan Kapitzke (saxophone) and Christian Fischer (trombone) joined in. Furthermore Stephan Buehler (lead-guitar), again Stefan Kapitzke (organ), Ansgar Freyberg (percussion) and BossHoss intern Lucas Sehnert (piano) contributed to the recording.

Former students joined the recording

Lennart Jeschke from Wunstorf, also an ex-student of the song writer, played the acoustic-guitar and the bass. In his studio “studioexport” in Wunstorf he finally made the mix and mastering of the song, all in all produced by Ansgar Freyberg. Robert Jonczyk, Freyberg’s ex-drum-scholar, played the drums and his father was the lead-singer. Additionally the female singers of the band “Beatorg” joined the choir together with Ansgar Freyberg, Semjon Barias, Stefan Kapitzke, Christian Fischer and Lennart Jeschke.

The song’s topics really inflicted Jonczyk since he taught politics and economics at Wunstorf’s High-School Hölty-Gymnasium Wunstorf. “What really concerns me a lot apart from Corona and its burdening impact on all people’s economic and social life is the poisoning effect of haters and ‘alternative facts’ spread on the internet”, Jonczyk says. In his mind these gradually increase social tensions.
